The Backfences Lession

Update 16-Juni-2007:

Backfences: Lessons Learned
von Mark Potts auf Recovering Journalist (in Englisch)

The shutdown of Backfence, a pioneer of hyperlocal media, is not a proof that 'Locals' and 'Hyperlocals' don't work - but a reminder to old and new media that

- the 'locals' must be in the drivers seat and that
- it only works if the publishers' are networked, pay their 'fee' and are of value to that community and
- it works bottom up (and not bottom down) ...

If the WAZ bosses (and other) wonder why their Locals don't work, the business people running that Media Group forgot all about that ...
